Wipala’s Story
The creation of Wipala began with my near breakdown while holding a unicorn headband.
I wasn’t used to being broken by such a simple foe. But there I was, in the accessories aisle of Target at 5pm, about to buy another unicorn headband for my daughter. She was tired, dinner wasn’t ready, and the easy thing would have been to give in. But I stopped.
Looking down into my daughter’s deep, brown eyes I finally felt something that I already knew. I knew there were better ways to support her growing interest in fashion. I knew there was a better way to enrich her life and inspire curiosity in the world around her. My daughter, and other kids like her, deserved better stories. And I had to be the one to help tell them.
I didn’t need to look far for examples of strong women who knew they needed to step up. There was my Abuelita Lilia working a night shift in a textile factory while raising three kids on her own. And the tenacity of great grandma Esther to own her businesses as a single woman. These stories were the foundation of my own bravery, resiliency and open-mindedness. They inspired me to pursue a career in the NGO sector and push for positive change. They also profoundly shaped my approach in raising two strong, kind, resilient, and curious kids. I wanted to bring empowering and lasting experiences into the lives of the next generation just like the strong women before me.
At 5pm in a Target, I said no to a headband and yes to something better– WIPALABOX.
WipalaBox is built on the foundation of stories and traditions that endure. Stories that celebrate our connected human experience. Traditions that inspire curiosity in our diverse world.
